Malta is
expected to benefit from the creation of a number of environmental projects
through a new programme called LIFE+. The first process of the programme was launched
on Monday and will provide Lm858,500 (€2 million) every year towards the
conservation of biodiversity as well as the development of environmental
politics.
Public and private entities, along with
non-governmental organisations (NGOs) will all be eligible for funds from the
European Union programme.
Speaking during a seminar held for parties
interested in LIFE+, Minister for Rural Affairs and the Environment George
Pullicino said that the government managed to almost double Malta’s funds.
The programme will focus particularly on
the conservation of wild birds, fauna and flora, as well as the development of
environmental politics concerning issues such as climate change, health,
quality of life, natural resources waste and the dissemination of information
and communication regarding environmental issues.
LIFE+ will continue from where last year’s
LIFE programme left off, with the difference that chosen projects will be those
addressing the environmental priorities in Malta.
