The winners of the Euro Challenge ’08 competition, organised by the
National Euro Changeover Committee in conjunction with the Education
Division and financed by the European Commission, recently visited key
European Union institutions as well as the Malta Representation in
Brussels.
The four students from St. Michael School, Qormi: Matteo Depares,
Wilbert Tabone, Mauro Magro and Andrew Camilleri together with their
link teacher Joseph Agius and Euro Challenge Coordinator Kevin
Azzopardi had meetings with Maltese MEPs Simon Busuttil, David Casa and
Louis Grech.
During these meetings the students raised a number of issues which
affect Malta and the standard of living enjoyed by its citizens. Later
on, the Maltese delegation was also welcomed at Dar Malta by Ambassador
Richard Cachia Caruana, Permanent Representative to the European Union,
who explained his role as well as that of all of his staff at the
Permanent Representation.
The highlight of the visit was a short Award Giving Ceremony presided
by EU Commissioner for Finance and Economic and Monetary Affairs
Joaquin Almunia, who presented a number of tokens to the Maltese
delegation as well as the winning trophy.
Commissioner Almunia said that he was very impressed with the boys’
work who managed to produce an attractive, creative and colourful
16-page activity booklet related to the euro and the EMU including a
number of comic strips, sudoku, a board game as well as an interactive
CD.
The students also attended information sessions on how the European
Commission and European Parliament function as well as toured both
institutions. The visit was wrapped up with a half-day tour around
Brussels including the Atomium and Mini-Europe.
The Euro Challenge project now will step into the next gear which
entails polished off, printing and distribution in all secondary
schools in Malta and Gozo of the winning entry. The European Commission
is also considering the idea of having the same booklet being used in
countries that are yet to enter the eurozone.
