On Tuesday 27 May 2008, European residents are going to celebrate European Neighbours' Day. All over Europe, initiatives to bring people together will be set up at the local level and citizens are strongly encouraged to come up with their own ideas. With the aim to promote closer social interaction, participation and exchange, the day mainly relies on the activities organized by the citizens themselves.

Hundreds of thousands of micro-events will be held throughout Europe, forging a major network based on solidarity and creating the ideal breeding ground for a stronger social mix to grow.

The European launch and the press conference of the day will take place in Liverpool on 12 May 2008.

European Neighbours' Day was launched in 1990 by an organisation in Paris called "Paris d'Amis" and is now an initiative of the European Federation of Local Solidarity (E.F.L.S.). Its objective is to foster community cohesion in Europe, by creating networks for exchanges on neighbourly and community practices.

This year the day is under the patronage of Mr. Vladimír SPIDLA, European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities:
"The EU provides a unique model for the coexistence of diverse nations, languages, cultures and lifestyles. 50 years ago the idea of bringing our continent's diverse populations together under one umbrella, the European Union, seemed to be beyond reach. Now we have grown to 27 Member States and almost three quarters of EU citizens (72%) believe that people with a different background (ethnic, religious or national) enrich the cultural life of their country. Our societies are becoming increasingly diverse. Mutual understanding and respect are therefore vital for deepening our common European values of solidarity, freedom, democracy and peace. That is why we have chosen the slogan 'Together in diversity' for this Year of Intercultural Dialogue. The European Commission warmly welcomes the initiative to bring neighbours in Europe 'Together in diversity' on 27 May 2008."
