The European Commission is considering a new relationship with Mediterranean states in the EU, such as Malta, and other countries in the Mediterranean region, following France’s proposal of a Union for the Mediterranean.
It is believed that according to an internal paper discussed last week in EU commissioners' cabinets, a "multilateral partnership" that encompasses all EU states is the preferred option so far, according to the euobserver.com
The first summit for the Union of the Mediterranean is to be held on July 13th under the French EU presidency. The summit will aim to formally create the "Barcelona Process - A Union for the Mediterranean" and establish the union's "structures and principle goals."
The Union for the Mediterranean will address issues such as immigration, security and environment in a collaborative fashion.
The commission is soon to present its ideas on the Union for the Mediterranean to member states and the European Parliament. The project will then be formally discussed by EU leaders at a Brussels summit next month, the euobserver.com said.
