Ireland rejects EU Lisbon Treaty in referendum

An overwhelming ‘No’ prevailed in the referendum about the EU’s Lisbon Treaty according to the latest unofficial tallies.
This ‘No’ could mean that the Lisbon Treaty would be scrapped by the EU even when 18 of the 27 member states, including Malta, have already ratified it. This could also mean that Malta's sixth seat in the European Parliament would need to be re-negotiated.
Campaigners from the ‘No’ camp are hailing this as a major victory for democracy.
Political analysts are however saying that if Ireland is the only country to reject the Treaty then the other 26 member states could still go ahead with it. Another option is to re-negotiate parts of the treaty and take it to public vote once again.
The Irish government has however stated that a second referendum was not an option.
