MEPs demand fairer processing of asylum applications

Detention of immigrants should only come as a last resort according to MEPs and that procedures for filtering applications of asylum seekers should be shared by all Member States.

Euro-parliamentarians have adopted the ˇ°own-initiative reportˇ± by Jean Lambertby by which they are effectively asking the Commission to add a provision restricting the detention of Dublin claimants to a measure of last resort, thereby specifying the grounds on which detention may be employed and the procedural safeguards which should be provided for.

MEPs are calling on the Commission to complement the Dublin system with measures in order to make it fairer for migrants as well as for Member States, by sharing the work of examining asylum applications and ensuring better rights for claimants.

ˇ°Detention should be used only as a last resort solution,ˇ± MEPs say.
