MGRM welcomes EU report on homophobia

The Malta Gay Rights Movement (MGRM) has welcomed the publication of a report on homophobia and discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation by the EU's Fundamental Rights Agency.

Among the report�s conclusions, the legal framework in Malta was found to be inadequate in addressing discrimination against the local gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

EU information centre opened in Gozo

All those involved in the private and public sectors in Gozo, including NGO’s and Local Councils, will now be able to refer to a newly set-up office in order to obtain relevant assistance for better access to EU Funding programmes.

This is expected to attract more EU funds on a regional basis for the island of Gozo.

Inflation in Euro area rises to 4.0% in June

The inflation rate in the Euro area is expected to be 4.0% in June 2008 according to a flash estimate issued by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities on Monday.

The inflation rate in May stood at 3.7%.

Immigration burdens to be shared by all EU states

European leaders have agreed that illegal immigration is a European problem and that all 27 member states should shoulder responsibilities fairly.

This stands out as a major point of interest for Malta in the conclusions of the summit of the European Council held in Brussels on Thursday and Friday, June 19-20.

EC welcomes progress towards meeting Kyoto target

European Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas on Wednesday welcomed the progress made by many Member States in reducing their greenhouse gas emissions in 2006. The emissions inventory compiled by the European Environment Agency for 2006, the latest year for which complete data is available, shows that EU-15 emissions dropped by 0.8% from 2005, taking emissions to 2.7% below their levels in the base year (1990 in most cases).

This puts the EU-15 well on track to meeting its Kyoto Protocol target of keeping average emissions between 2008 and 2012 at least 8% below base year levels.

Lisbon treaty continues to dominate EU summit

The Maltese delegation participating in the two-day summit of the EU Council in Brussels has worked late into Thursday night as discussions went on in an attempt to find a sensible way forward for the ratification of the Lisbon treaty.

Discussions, which continued on Friday morning over an unprogrammed breakfast, have not as yet yielded any concrete proposals or solutions.
