Labour market data for November 2006 provided by the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC) indicate that in November 2006, the labour supply increased by 743 persons over the same month in 2005. The full-time gainfully occupied population increased by 603 persons, whereas the registered unemployed increased by 140 persons.
A comparison between the data for November 2005 and November 2006 indicates that, among the sectors that accounted for the increase in employment in November 2006, the principal ones were business activities, construction and manufacture of electronic components. Sectors registering drops in employment included transport, storage and communication, manufacture of textiles and public administration.
With specific reference to the private sector, an increase in employment took place in real estate, renting and business activities. This sector includes accounting and auditing activities, business and management consultancy, holding companies, architectural and engineering activities, advertising, security activities, industrial cleaning and call centres. In addition, growth in employment occurred in community, social and personal services activities. This includes betting companies and entertainment activities among other services.
According to administrative sources, total part-time employment rose by 3,463 persons between November 2005 and November 2006. This increase included 1,483 persons whose part-time job is their secondary occupation and 1,980 persons whose part-time job is their primary occupation.
Meanwhile in November 2006, the number of apprentices, students and trainees dropped by 20.2 per cent over the same month in the preceding year.
