Euro starter kits valued at Lm56.24 (€131) are now available for small businesses from all bank branches, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Finance Tonio Fenech announced on Saturday.

The aim of the retail kits is for retailers to be able to give change on January 1, 2008 when the euro is officially adopted, Mr Fenech explained during the press conference at the BOV Attard branch.

The Central Bank of Malta estimates that 41.51 million euro bank notes, amounting to €799 million and 140 million euro coins valued at €39.29 wil be required.

BOV expects to sell approximately 15,000 retailer kits in the coming four weeks.

Meanwhile, Parliamentary Secretary Tonio Fenech announced that mini-kits for consumers valued at Lm5 (€11.65) will be on sale from banks and postal offices as from on Monday 10th December.
