Stock of vehicles rises by 2,470 in second quarter

The stock of licensed motor vehicles rose by 2,470 in the second quarter of 2008, to stand at 291,920, figures published by the National Statistics Office on Monday reveal.

As at end June 2008, the stock of licensed motor vehicles stood at 291,920. Of these, 75.9% were private vehicles while commercial vehicles accounted for 16.3 %.

New licences issued during the second quarter of 2008 amounted to 3,422. Private vehicles accounted for 2,170 new licences, or 63.4 % of the total. In the reference quarter, the majority of new licences were issued to private vehicles falling within 'Class 1' (<1300 cc). This class accounted for 1,288 new licences, while vehicles in 'Class 2' (1301-1449 cc) accounted for 282. Newly-licensed 'new' motor vehicles amounted to 2,021, or 59.1% of the total, while newly-licensed 'used' motor vehicles amounted to 1,401.

In the second quarter of 2008, 10 vehicles were exported, a decrease of one over the first quarter.

Scrapped vehicles numbered 668 of which 62.7 %were 'Class 1' private cars
(<1300 cc).

In the quarter under review, 1366 vehicles were garaged. This means that as at end June, garaged vehicles accounted to nearly 67 %of total vehicles that are no longer on the road.
