At 7,308 persons, registered unemployment in January 2007
decreased by 391 persons when compared to the same month last year.
Men aged
between 30 and 44, along with men aged over 45, accounting for nearly
two-thirds of the registered unemployed.
Women accounted for 22.8% of unemployment registrants, the
majority being between the ages of 30 and 44. Among men, occupations related to
services, trades and elementary duties were the most commonly sought after,
whereas women were inclined to look for jobs which were clerical or
service-oriented.
According to the National Statistics Office (NSO), from a
regional perspective, the number of registered unemployed in Gozo remained relatively
stable when compared to January 2006, while its counterpart in Malta decreased
by 387 persons.
In turn, in September 2006, the registered unemployment rate
stood at 4.9% of the labour supply implying no change from the same month of
2006. On a gender basis, the unemployment rate for men stood at 5.3, whilst the
unemployment rate for women stood at 3.9%.
