Gainfully occupied increase in December 2007

Labour market data for December 2007 indicate that the full-time gainfully occupied population increased by 3,183 persons while unemployment decreased by 989 persons when compared to December 2006. 

This was revealed in figures published on Tuesday by the National Statistics Office.

Inquiry about school uniforms launched

The Minister of Finance, the Economy and Investment, Tonio Fenech, has announced that the Office for Fair Competition within the Consumer and Competition Division will be launching an inquiry into the market of school uniforms, books and stationery.

Minister Fenech explained that almost all students of Government schools, Church schools and Independent schools in Malta and Gozo are obliged to wear a uniform of some description and are sometimes expected to order their uniform, books and stationery according to a specified list or from a specified retailer.

BOV signs loan agreement with Enemalta

Bank of Valletta signed a loan agreement of €120 million with Enemalta Corporation following discussions between the two organizations.

€100 million were made available to re-finance existing international debt while the remaining €20 million will be utilized by the Corporation to finance capital investments.

GWU section secretary resigns post

Roberto Cristiano. the secretary of the General Workers' Union's manufacturing and SMEs section has resigned it was revealed on Monday.

Cristiano had  been a section secretary for the past 10 years.

Malta Fund Industry hosts first seminar for industry

The Malta Association of Fund Managers and Administrators (MAFMA) organised its first Malta Fund Industry Seminar on 28 April 2008.

This event was held at the Malta Stock Exchange premises and it was well attended by participants from the local financial services industry.

New report about Maltese telecoms

The international company Research and Markets has announced the addition of a new report called “Malta - Key Statistics, Telecom Market & Regulatory Overviews” to their offering.

The report says Malta has a small telecom market with mobile and broadband penetration below the EU average, though there has been strong recent growth in broadband take-up.
