Members of Gift of Life said in a statement that a meeting was held with the Prime Minister, Dr Lawrence Gonzi to discuss developments regarding the proposed amendment to the Constitution to expressly protect the right to life of the unborn from conception. The organisation described the meeting as “most cordial and frank”.

Following this meeting, Gift of Life remains hopeful about a positive outcome to the campaign.

Although abortion is illegal in Malta, Gift of Life is lobbying for a constitutional change in order to make it more difficult for a future government to legalise it.

The group had previously said it may have to stop the campaign unless the government goes ahead with the constitutional amendment.

The pro-life group called for the Constitutional amendment to protect the unborn child in 2005. Later that year, Minister for Justice and Home Affairs Tonio Borg announced the government's intention to entrench the anti-abortion law in the Constitution.
