A new political party called Azzjoni Nazzjonali (National Action) was launched on Saturday. One of the founders, former Nationalist Party (PN) Member of Parliament (MP) Josie Muscat said that the party does not embrace a right-wing or left-wing ideology but is set to work for the benefit of Malta at large.

The two other founders are entrepreneur Angelo Xuereb and University lecturer Philip Beattie. With its logo Sovranita’, Serjeta’ u Ġustizzja (Sovereignty, Seriousness and Justice), the party is set to take Malta into a new era, stated Dr Muscat.

Speaking in a press conference on Saturday, Dr Muscat said that the party is founded by Maltese who saw the island obtain its sovereignty and will provide voters with an alternative to the two dominant parties in the island.

Saturday’s press conference was held to present Azzjoni Nazzjonali’s principles. It will be up to the future leader of the party to outline the details of its political programme, continued Dr Muscat.

The party wishes to change Malta’s political system where the President will be elected by citizens and conferred with more power. The party believes that the President should not be affiliated with a political party and instead be representative of all Maltese citizens.

Dr Muscat also said that Azzjoni Nazzjonali believes that the European Union (EU) should equally share the burden of illegal immigration. Following an agreement with the bloc,  Azzjoni Nazzjonali said that illegal immigrants reaching Malta will be hosted for one month and subsequently resettled in other member states.

Angelo Xuereb also spoke during the press conference, explaining how Azzjoni Nazzjonali intends to contest the upcoming general election.
