Malta, Australia want to strengthen relations

Australia is seeking to strengthen its relations and collaboration with the Maltese Government, particularly in the financial service sector, said Prime Minister John Howard in a meeting with his Maltese counterpart Dr Lawrence Gonzi.

Prime Ministers Gonzi and HowardDr Gonzi is presently in Canberra, and met Prime Minister Howard as part of a visit he is paying to Australia. Prime Minister Gonzi said that among the reasons of his visit is the corroboration of bilateral, economic and political relations with Australia.

The two Prime Ministers also discussed Maltese Foreign Minister Michael Frendo’s candidature as Secretary General of the Commonwealth, with both governments declaring their efforts to work hand in hand within the organisation.  

The Maltese Prime Minister also met Australia’s Opposition leader Kevin Rudd, with both parties expressing the need for heightened cooperation.  

Later during the day, the Prime Minister also attended the launch of aMaltese Migrant Exhibition at National Capital Exhibition.
