Former Nationalist MP Richard Muscat has resigned from his post as Malta's Ambassador to the Republic of Ireland, following a number of allegations about an offence made by his son which appeared recently in the Irish press.

While stating that the the allegations were unfounded, Mr Muscat decided to resign since he said that that attacks were alientating him from his work as ambassador.

Foreign Minister Michael Frendo accepted Mr Muscat's resignation and thanked him for the service he gave to promote good relationships between Malta and Ireland.

No diplomatic immunity  has been asked in this case and the Foreign Ministry stated that it will not make use of such immunity.

Mr Richard Muscat was reappointed as Ambassador of Republic of Ireland last week by Minister Frendo. He was supposed to serve until July 31, 2008.
