The National Statistics Office (NSO) has published a report entitled Technical Explanations on the Recent Revisions to GDP Statistics. The report was drawn up following the mandate given by the Malta Statistics Authority Chairman Mr Reno Camilleri, which is to answer the questions posed in the report published by the Malta Labour Party (MLP) to clarify any misconceptions on the subject matter.

In a statement, the Malta Statistics Authority also noted the resignation of the NSO Director General, Dr Gordon Cordina.

The Board appointed to draw up the report on the case noted the resignation of the NSO Director General and whilst thanking him for his efforts and good work and reiterating the Board’s trust in him, had no option but to accept his decision and resignation.

Within the report there is also the National Statistics Office’s explanation which was presented to the media on 12 January 2007 . The Report may also be downloaded from the NSO website.

The Malta Statistics Authority was satisfied with the technical report submitted on the 26 January 2007 prepared by the NSO whereby a detailed explanation was given vis-à-vis revisions on GDP statistics as published in News Release 277/2006 of the 7th December 2006.

As a reaction to Dr Gordon Cordina’s resignation, the Government said in a statement it condemns the personal attacks by the Malta Labour Party (MLP) on the NSO General Director.

Dr Cordina stated that he always did his utmost in his work with integrity and professionalism. In a separate statement the Malta Statistics Authority’s Board also confirmed its trust in Dr Cordina.

The Government added that it condemns the way the MLP turned a technical and academic discussion into personal attacks and persecution at the loss of the National Statistics Office.
