Provisional
labour market data for June 2007 indicate that the full-time gainfully occupied
population
increased by 587 persons while unemployment decreased by 724 persons when
compared
to June 2006.
The
labour
supply
decreased by 137 persons over the same month in 2006. The full-time gainfully
occupied
population
increased by 587 persons, whereas the registered unemployed decreased by 724
persons.
This
was announced in a news release by the National Statistics office which presented
provisional labour market data, provided by the Employment and
Training
Corporation (ETC), for the month of June 2007.
A
comparison between the provisional data for June 2007 and June 2006 indicates
that full-time
employment
increased by 587 persons.The private sector increased by
1,184
persons, whereas the public sector decreased by 597 persons.
With
specific reference to the private sector, an increase in employment took place
in real
estate,
renting and business activities. This sector includes
accounting
and auditing activities, business and management consultancy, architectural and
engineering
activities, advertising, security activities, industrial cleaning and call
centres.
Growth
in employment also occurred in community, social and personal services
activities. This includes betting companies and entertainment activities
amongst
other services. Other domains within the private sector which reported a growth
in
employment
included education and health and social work. On the other hand, the main
domains within the private sector which have
seen a
drop in employment were the following: hotels and restaurants,
manufacturing
and transport, storage and communication.
In the
twelve months to June 2007, employment in the public sector went down by 597.
The
principal
domains in which this decline took place were the following: transport, storage
and
communication;
construction and
electricity,
gas and water supply. Two exceptions to this declining
trend
were the domains of public administration and health and social
work
activities.
Provisional
data for June 2007 indicate that total part-time employment rose by 3,130
persons
over
the some month in 2006. This increase included 1,182 persons whose part-time
job is
their
secondary occupation and 1,948 persons whose part-time job is their primary
occupation.
The
principal domains which have seen an increase in part-time jobs as secondary
employment
were
the following: real estate, renting and business and
wholesale
and retail trade.
