Former Finance and Foreign Affairs Minister John Dalli has been appointed consultant to the government on financial and industrial matters, three years after he resigned following allegations on his conduct as a minister.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, flanked by Mr Dalli, addressed a press conference at Castille to make the announcement.  He said the allegations made on the former minister were proved to be false.   A report by the Auditor General found no irregularities.

Lawrence Gonzi beat John Dalli in the election for PN leader in 2004 when Eddie Fenech Adami stepped down.
