Dr Alfred Sant 'stable' after 'major' surgery

The Leader of the Opposition and the MLP Dr. Alfred Sant successfully underwent surgery on Thursday morning and his condition is stable, a medical bulettin said.
The medical team was led by Prof Anthony Zammit, one of the best in his field in Malta, who addressed the press shortly after the operation.
He described the surgery as a 'major operation' and everything went as expected. No complications arised. His condition is 'stable'.
Prof Zammit said Dr Sant is expected to stay for 10 days in hospital for recovery. He emphasised he needs 'absolute rest' and no visitors will be allowed.
Surgery started at around 0830 CET and ended around three hours later at the Mater Dei Hospital.
News of Dr Sant's surgery was announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Dr Charles Mangion, MLP deputy leader for Parliamentary Affairs, is acting leader of the party and actin Leader of the Opposition.
In the meantime a wave of solidarity was directed at Dr Sant and his familiy from the most promiment politicans in the country, the political parties, members of Civil Society and individual citizens who send their wished to the MLPs broadcasting stations.
On Thursday it was the turn of the Bishops of the Maltese Islands and the Speaker of Parliament Anton Tabone to express their solidarity.
MLP secretary general Jason Micallef on behalf of the party thanked all those who wished Dr Sant a quick recovery and also thanked all those who are taking care of his health.
Further medical bulettins will be issued later, Jason Micallef said.
