Malta might go to the polls on March 8. The date has been pronounced by various news sources on Sunday.

The Sunday Times reported that Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi is targeting March 8 for a general election though he is leaving the option open to go to the polls a week later.

It is understood that the Prime Minister is intending to dissolve Parliament on February 4 or perhaps sooner and local council elections are expected to be on the same day as the general election, the newspaper stated.

Meanwhile, it-Torca reported that the setting up of billboards by the Nationalist Party in various roads indicates that a general election will soon be called.

Sources speaking to It-Torca told the newspaper that once parliament approves the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty possibly on Tuesday, Prime Minister Gonzi will announce an election on Wednesday.

The same sources reported that the Office of the Prime Minister contacted the Electoral Commission and that the March 8 date was verbally mentioned.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister is expected to contest the ninth district which is made up of San Ġwann, Msida, GФargФur, Ta' Xbiex and Swieqi besides the second district.

Labour Party Leader Dr Alfred Sant will also be contesting the election despite undergoing surgery late in December.
