The Malta Labour Party’s leader and leader of the Opposition, Dr Alfred Sant, said he welcomed the announcement of the date for general elections on March 8th, because indecision linked to this highly expected date was having negative economic repercussions. He said this during a press conference held on Monday afternoon at the Labour party’s headquarters.
Dr Sant also stated that the Maltese people have long been yearning for a change and they are finally getting their opportunity in March. In the course of his reaction to the prime minister’s morning announcement, Dr Sant outlined a framework of four pillars on which the Labour party’s electoral campaign will be focusing on in the coming weeks.
These are zero tolerance to corruption, creating opportunities for work, quality of life which Dr Sant said will be the main theme of the campaign and initiatives and reforms in social policies.
The Labour party in government would ensure that it will be proactive in European affairs contributing towards a more “social Europe”, said the Opposition leader.
He also said that the Labour party will be working as a team in this campaign and that the party’s guiding slogan will be “Xoghol. Harsien. Dinjita” (Work. Protection. Dignity).
Dr Sant also revealed that the party shall be holding its first mass rally on Tuesday evening and that later on in the week an extraordinary general conference will be held during which the electoral manifesto and the lists of candidates contesting the local and general elections will be approved.
