On the third day of the electoral campaign the executive committee of the Nationalist Party approved the party's electoral programme on Wednesday afternoon.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi stated that the programme has three fundamental pillars, namely, the environment, education and the economy.Dr Gonzi said that the programme is a vehicle to Vision 2015 which he had outlined.

In the environment sector a need was called for, he said, whilst in education an investment in IT-based education was already ensuring that no one is left behind.  As for the economy, tax-cuts to boost economic growth constituted the main proposal in the Nationalist programme.

Prime Minister Gonzi also brought up these central issues from the PN’s programme with shop owners he visited on Wednesday morning in Birkirkara and during a business breakfast with social partners.

The Leader of the Opposition and the Malta Labour Party Dr Alfred Sant also started his day by meeting shop owners.  While visiting the commercial community in Hamrun, he said that a new Labour government would cut unnecessary bureaucracy and fees for the commercial sector.

Dr Sant stated that the Malta Labour Party would lease sites to the self-employed from where they can run and develop their business and which they would be able to use as guarantees with commercial banks. A labour administration would also give substantial venture capital to emerging businesses, especially those run by young people.

During his visit, Dr Sant was accompanied by deputy leaders Dr Charles Mangion and Dr Michael Falzon.

On Wednesday afternoon, Alternattiva Demokratika, the green party, gave a press conference during which the party’s Chairperson, Dr Harry Vassallo and AD spokesperson Carmel Cacopardo, presented some core principles in their campaign. They said the environment has fallen victim to a silent complicity between the two bigger parties who serve the interests of the speculators and contractors who finance their parties.

Dr Vassallo stated that to this day “The regulator of planning and protection of the environment remained subject to political interference and because of this it has lost all credibility.” Carmel Cacopardo followed this comment saying that in a coalition government AD would strive towards a reform in MEPA so that the protection of the environment would be separated from the planning department.

On day three of the electoral campaign, the Federazzjoni Kaccaturi U Nassaba Konservazzjonisti, (FKNK), the hunters’ federation, published a document in which it claimed that its members hold 17,816 votes. The amounts of votes are listed district-by-district and the document states that this total excludes hunters’ families.  According to FKNK it also excludes some 4,000 trappers who were not given the chance to acquire a licence when the government stopped issuing licences for trapping in 2002.
