The Government for the second time in two days strongly denied Opposition and MLP leader Dr Sant’s claim that during the talks on the social pact the Government had proposed that the first 100 hours of overtime should be paid as ordinary time and not at time and a half.

The government said that this proposal was made by a section of the employers and the draft social pact did not include anything on overtime. Dr Sant replied to this statement by publishing the first draft of the social pact, prepared by the government and employers in 2004, which he insists proposed that the first four hours of overtime per week be paid at normal rates up to 100 hours.

The Government issued a counter-statement on Saturday evening stating again that the Government never made any proposal on overtime. The proposal referred to by Dr Sant was made by employers, and the government never agreed with it. Furthermore, with regards the proposal to Air Malta also mentioned by Dr Sant, this was made by the company against the advice of the Investments Minister, the Government said.

On the sixth day of the electoral campaign, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi met the Association of Women in Business at the PN Headquarters. President Doris Sammut said that the association welcomed the income tax incentives and the proposed scheme whereby working mothers have a year of tax deducted for each child. Ms Sammut also praised the opening of more child care centres which encourage mothers to work.

On Saturday political activities continued as Opposition and MLP leader Alfred Sant explained the MLP electoral programme in an interview on the party radio station.

PM Gonzi met shop owners in Qormi and later on met with the National Commission for Persons with Disability which discussed the Nationalist Party’s political programme. The Prime Minister recognised and praised the Commission’s work. He however expressed his disagreement at the MLP’s proposal that St Luke’s Hospital be converted into a residence for persons with a disability.

Gozo was also dealt with by both parties on Saturday. In the afternoon, PM Gonzi met delegations from the Gozo Business Chamber and the Gozo Tourism Association and the MLP's deputy leaders went in Victoria, Gozo.

Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party (AD) held a conference at Marsamxett in Valletta over a local referendum on large projects.

In turn, Azzjoni Nazzjonali (AN) on Saturday published its electoral manifesto. The manifest opens with the first of a series of proposals which states that in order to create balance the President ought to be given more power and ought to be elected by the people while also diminishing the number of parliament members and local council representatives. With regards the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA), AN say that its board ought to be appointed by the President and that its restructuring should involve a separation between Environment and Developing sectors within the same authority. The manifest also mentions a regeneration of tourism in the south of Malta and in the harbour area.

AN also addressed the issue of illegal immigration in a 14-point long list amongst which it is proposing that a limit to the number of refugees in Malta is decided upon and indeed argued that should the EU continue to delay taking a decision on how to address Malta’s situation, illegal immigrants should be boarded on a plane to Brussels. Open centres ought to be closed and illegal immigrants detained until they are capable of leaving Malta, the manifesto says. Other proposals were made with regards health, work and the economy.

On Saturday closed the nominations for Local Council Elections. There will be 241 candidates for 143 seats. Elections will be held in 23 localities on the same day as the general elections. Nominations for the general elections open on Monday. The Malta Labour Party has already announced its list of 70 candidates for the general elections.
