The beginning of the second week of the electoral campaign saw Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi visiting various commercial outlets in Mosta under the pouring rain.
Dr Gonzi spoke to customers and shopkeepers alike chatting casually and posing for snapshots. He said that tax cuts over the past two years had helped businesses and consumers and said the process will continue with the tax cuts across the board which the PN is planning to carry out if it is elected in March 8.
PM Gonzi also said that the commercial sector has experienced an expansion during the PN’s administration, with 700 new trading licences issued every year. He attributed this expansion partly to a reduction in the costs of trading licences and the introduction of new provisions to incentivize SMEs.
Opposition Leader and Leader of the Malta Labour Party Dr Alfred Sant started his eighth day of campaigning by giving a press conference, during which he stated that the family is at the core of the Labour party’s social policy. This included a reinforcing of the legal framework in which government agencies and entities responsible for protecting children operate.
It also includes the previously mentioned fiscal measures such as the cutting of surcharge and VAT refunds on educational items.
After the press conference, Dr Sant went to Valletta to submit his election nomination at the offices of the Electoral Commission. Deputy leaders Charles Mangion and Michael Falzon, who were accompanying him, also submitted their papers.
The Chairperson of Alternattiva Demokratika, the green party, Dr Harry Vassallo submitted his nomination later on Monday.
