On the eleventh day of the electoral campaign, Opposition Leader and Leader of the Malta Labour Party Dr Alfred Sant, answered questions from six journalists in a news conference on PBS.
Dr Sant categorically stated that EU membership is a closed case and reiterated the need to strive towards fulfilling social principles. He said, amongst other things, that the family is at the core of the party’s policies and that a new Labour government would give childhood back to children.
“The choice that the Maltese nation has is in choosing to change to a just and efficient government.” Dr Sant said.
On Thursday morning,Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi visited University students on campus urging them to vote as their future depended on it. Dr Gonzi pledged that a Nationalist government would retain the students’ stipends.
Dr Gonzi, together with Mrs Kate Gonzi, also found time to meet with women in Naxxar for a dialogue called “Time with the family” (Hin mal-Familja) during which he reiterated his commitment to the environment and reform at MEPA. He also spoke of the fiscal incentives being proposed by his party and about women’s role in society.
In a press conference held in Sliema, Alternattiva Demokratika, the Green Party, appealed to government and opposition to refrain from turning the Malta Drydocks into an electoral football once again.
Dr. Harry Vassallo stated that " We believe that the Drydocks can only survive beyond 2008 if a few hundred employees are re-assigned to a separate business organisation that should be involved in the building of solar panels and photovoltaic panels. The next government has an opportunity to retain the skills of many Drydocks employees by shifting their work onto production that can benefit all Maltese families by providing them with heavily subsidised solar water heaters and photovoltaic panels."
The eleventh day of the electoral campaign brought with it a message from the Archbishop’s Curia underlining the duty of every Christian to reflect and to vote at general elections.
The document says that every Christian is bound by moral duty to participate fully in the building of a just society that safeguards common good. This includes the duty of exercising one’s right to vote, with a conscience that is well formed and not on the basis of personal interests or blind affiliation with a political party.
For the evening campaign activities, both Dr Alfred Sant and Dr Lawrence Gonzi, engaged in public meetings in Pembroke and Zebbug respectively.
