Sant vists MFAOn Friday morning, Opposition Leader and Leader of the Malta Labour Party Dr Alfred Sant visited the Malta Football Association and promised that a Labour government would waive VAT or reduce tax on capital projects by sports associations and reduce tax on tickets for sports events.

Dr Sant also said that a Labour administration would promote a wider variety of sport activities in schools and would ensure that children get at least 5 hours of physical education a week.

On Friday evening a group of MLP candidates led by Dr Sant visited various localities of the fourth district. During his speech in Tarxien Dr Sant reiterated that the family was at the centre of Labour’s social policy.  He also said that the Nationalist Party cannot be trusted because, unlike Labour, it did not want to keep public healthcare free of charge.

On a visit to the Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary in Naxxar, Prime Minister Dr Lawrence Gonzi and his wife met students and staff.  They were shown around the school premises by the students themselves.

PM Gonzi at Higher Secondary Dr Gonzi said that the number of youths opting for post-secondary studies has increased from 43% in 1999 to nearly 70% in 2007.   He also said that there are around 15,000 students currently receiving a stipend, amounting to around €19 million a year.

Prime Minister Gonzi stated that there had been a €1.4 million investment at the Higher Secondary alone and government was also investing on a new secondary and post-secondary campus in Rabat, Gozo, together with other investments at the Junior College.

Alternattiva Demokratika, the green party, chose transport as the theme of its twelfth day of the electoral campaign.  In a press conference, the party’s Chairperson, Dr Harry Vassallo, said that the first step has to be the removal of all monopolies in public transport to ensure that there will be attractive rewards for those who provide the fast, efficient and reliable services the country needs.
Dr Vassallo also proposed that those who do not apply for a driver's licence at 18 should be allowed to travel free on public transport and be entitled to hold a licence to drive a low-powered motor cycle exempt from registration and road licence fees.

In a poress conference on Friday morning, Azzjoni Nazzjonali leader Dr Josie Muscat said he believed there should be no political interference in the police force and the Armed Forces of Malta.

Dr Muscat said that the AFM could no longer cope with the burden of immigrants coming to the Maltese islands and that the soldiers were working under terrible conditions.
