The electoral programme of the Nationalist Party was approved on Saturday, thirteenth day of the electoral campaign, by the party’s general council.
The programme’s fundamental pillars, as presented to the council, are employment, education, environment, health and family and the council’s theme was the party’s electoral slogan Iva, Flimkien Kollox Possibbli (Yes, Together Everything is Possible).
In the council's closing speech, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi told candidates and councillors that "there are challenges out there. There are waves coming our way...but we are not a party which says no. [...] Let's be determined to move forward.[...] We are a party which does not divide the Maltese. We are a party which brings the Maltese together."
Earlier on Saturday afternoon, Prime Minister Gonzi inaugurated Malta’s first skate park at Tal-Qroqq roundabout. “The government intended to create another two similar facilities in the near future, as well as an indoor track for BMX”, Dr Gonzi revealed.
A much-anticipated “secret” audit report about the redevelopment of the Sant’ Antnin waste recycling plant in Marsascala was published on Saturday by Alternattiva Demokratika candidate Carmel Cacopardo.
Mr Cacopardo said he was publishing this preliminary report because institutions had failed their duty to keep society informed on matters of public interest so he felt that it was his moral duty to go on with the publication.
In a reaction to Mr Cacopardo’s press conference, the Ministry of Environment pointed out that the Audit Officer himself had objected to the publication of the report since it was not complete and needed to be revised in view of developments.
In his first visit to Gozo since the electoral campaign took off, Opposition Leader and Leader of the Malta Labour Party Dr Alfred Sant, met representatives of various organizations and also found time to meet Gozitan singer Morena who shall be representing the Maltese islands in the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest.
He also visited a pig farm in Ghasri where he said that the MLP would create a consultation office within the Ministry of Gozo where farmers can find expertise and support on matters of tapping EU funds for their activities.
The Labour party believes that there is great potential in Gozo with its diligent, hard-working people as well as with its numerous natural and tourist attractions.
Dr Sant also declared that in these last eight years Gozo’s contribution to economic growth has reached its worst levels and that as a consequence unemployment exceeded 700 people.
