Monday, fifteenth day of the electoral campaign, saw all party leaders meet university students together in a fiery debate in front of a packed audience. The debate was organised by the university media organisation, Insite, and touched on numerous subjects including environment, economy, education and stipends, MEPA and tax cuts.
PM Gonzi said that it made sense that MEPA was integrated in the prime minister’s responsibilities because like that the OPM could coordinate with various government ministries the changes that needed to be done. He promised those present that the PN would keep stipends and help students fulfill their opportunities.
To this, Opposition and Malta Labour Party Leader Dr Alfred Sant said that Dr Gonzi’s announcement that he would take charge of Mepa showed no confidence in minister George Pullicino.
This accusatory dynamic prevailed between the two leaders throughout the whole debate.
Dr Harry Vassallo, chairperson of Alternattiva Demokratika, the Green Party, said AD raising topics which other parties were avoiding such as divorce. He also said that neither of the large parties had said what was to become of the stock of 53,000 vacant dwellings.
Azzjoni Nazzjonali’s leader, Dr Josie Muscat, insisted that AN was not against illegal migrants, but against the quantities of migrants which Malta could not handle.
In another morning event, at a press conference at the MLP headquarters, Dr Sant said that a Labour administration would give SMEs a tax credit equivalent to half the surcharge on their water and electricity bill.
He also stated that a Labour government would be pragmatic in its approach to economic regeneration and that new foreign investors would be sought in countries as far afield as China, Russia and Kuwait.
Another highlight on this day was when Dr Harry Vassallo, accompanied by other AD candidates met representatives of the Malta Gay Rights Movement who presented a petition signed by 1,063 people asking for the enactment of specific proposals in favour of the minorities they represent.
Dr Vassallo said AD had always supported the MGRM proposals and said that the recognition of gay rights was a sign of tolerance and civilization.
