On the sixteenth morning of the electoral campaign, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi gave a press conference outside St Benedict’s College where he stated that the Nationalist party wants 85% of young people to pursue studies after secondary school.
“In 10 years, the percentage of young people in post-secondary courses has risen from 40 to 70% but this growth rate needed to be sustained and increased.” Dr Gonzi said.
He also spoke of the need to address the exams system and transition from primary to secondary schools. He said that state colleges were being set up in a way which made this transition as smooth as possible. He also criticized the Labour party’s proposal of a reception class calling it a mistaken experiment with very serious implications which would be felt even in the workforce.
In the course of the press conference, the Prime Minister also revealed that PN’s intentions were to introduce a modern system of assessment to replace the tensions of exams.
The leadership of the Malta Labour Party led by Dr Alfred Sant on Tuesday morning visited De La Rue security printers. The Opposition leader said that a Labour administration would strategically try to attract foreign investment and that it would do away with the current excessive bureaucracy in matters relating to industry.
Dr Sant also pointed out that many factory workers put in a lot of overtime and would therefore benefit from Labour’s proposal to remove income tax from overtime.
Alternattiva Demokratika, the green party, focused on the issue of Spring hunting on its sixteenth day of the electoral campaign.
In a press conference, AD’s Chairperson Dr Harry Vassallo challenged Evironment Minister George Pullicino to declare that the Spring hunting season will not be opened and reiterated his party's support to BirdLife following Sunday's arson attack on the cars of three birdwatchers.
Dr Vassallo accused the PN and the MLP of being unable to decide on hunting and were merely saying they would respect a decision by the European Court. He said that real Europeans should respect European directives.
