Education, projects for the Grand Harbour area, youths and the Freedom of Information Act were discussed on the eighteenth day of the electoral campaign.

gonziDuring an activity in Naxxar which targeted families, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said that his government offers stability in education and does not experiment with children’s futures unlike a Labour government. A Nationalist government invested wholly by modernizing 138 schools and building new colleges such as St Benedict’s College and St Ignatius College.

MATSEC re-sits will still be held in September, the PM retaliated in response to the MLP saying that they will be held in November. Meanwhile, a Nationalist government is determined that students do not miss a scholastic year. The Prime Minister criticised the Labour Party’s reception class proposal especially since it was proposed without prior consultation with the stakeholders in education, especially teachers.

On stipends, PM Gonzi said that these have given positive results with the number of students studying at post-secondary schools increasing by 30 per cent to 75 per cent in the past ten years. The government is aiming that figures increase to 85 per cent.

The government, PM Gonzi said, is also determined to continue offering new courses, course opportunities within foreign universities and scholarships as well as strengthen research.

santMeanwhile speaking in Birgu and later Sliema, Opposition leader Dr Alfred Sant said that a new Labour government will increase economic growth by 4 to 6 per cent a year thanks to a regional plan such as for the Grand Harbour area. This will in turn increase job opportunities and boost business.

During the press conference, Architect Charles Buhagiar presented the plans for the 100 project which cover various localities and which will be implemented by 2010.

Projects include a berth for cruise liners in Senglea, three new promenades and the ex-Sea Malta to serve as a nautical school.

During an activity later on throughout the day, Dr Alfred Sant promised that a new Labour government will investigate eve-of-election IT contracts.

Speaking in front of the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) on Thursday, Dr Harry Vassallo said that Alternattiva Demokratika (AD) insists on Whistleblower and Freedom of Information Act saying that the Government's negative attitude to recent revelations shows there is no real commitment to strengthening democracy. The nation is bound to know how public funds are

Meanwhile, Dr Josie Muscat from Azzjoni Nazzjonali (AN) said that his party will aim to create an education college system that encourages youth to focus on what they like and are good at.
