With exactly two weeks to go for general elections, political parties continued their electoral campaign fervently on Saturday.

On the twentieth day of the campaign, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Opposition leader Dr Alfred Sant both visited Gozo and spoke about their ambitions for the sister island.

101 Speaking on Radio 101 live from Gozo, PM Gonzi said that the government is in contact with foreign universities to explore the development of a new university campus in Gozo.

The Prime Minister reminded listeners of the 21 initiatives for Gozo announced in this year’s budget. He again denied the removal of Junior Lyceums.

With projects such as the Gozo Terminal and the 5-kilometre stretch of roads between Mgarr and Ghajnsielem and Victoria and San Lawrence completed, future projects include Eko-Ghawdex and the development of the Qortin area into a family park.

“We need to see that Gozo develops agri-tourism, the field of cruise liners, diving and typical Gozitan products and trades,” PM Gonzi said. The PN also believes in Gozo as a perfect destination for surgery interventions.

The Prime Minister also visited consumers and shop owners in Victoria.

Meanwhile, €552,020 were collected on Saturday during a PN fund-raising activity on NET TV. The marathon started at noon and ended just after 23:00CET.

sant Also in Gozo, Dr Alfred Sant said that the island is stagnant under Lawrence Gonzi’s government. Once elected, the Labour Party will create work opportunities for the Gozitans.

Among the Malta Labour Party (MLP) proposals for Gozo are a subsidized helicopter service and fiscal and financial incentives for small businesses, farmers, fishermen and those working in the tourism sector.

In a conference later in Buskett, Opposition leader Dr Sant called on the need for Buskett to be valued. One of the main problems in the area is the loss of soil during heavy rains due to rubble walls not being rebuilt.

The MLP believes in the need for a re-organisation of the management at Buskett, Dr Sant concluded.

While visiting retail outlets at the Sliema Ferries, Alternattiva Demokratika (AD) party leader Dr Harry Vassallo said that included among his party’s coalition priorities announced earlier this month was the reduction of company income tax from 35% to 30%.

”It is to everyone’s advantage that these tax reductions are made prudently and realistically in order to avoid any shock to the economy.” Dr Vassallo said. “Any short term shortfall in government revenue will be made up through an increase of tax rate on banks of 40%,” Dr Vassallo said.

Meanwhile in a press release, Zminijietna – Voice of the Left presented its proposals to the political parties in view of the 2008 General Election.  Amongst others, the organization called on a new Government to introduce measures to reduce the impact of economic burdens. It also said that policies are required through which workers’ income is increased, through fiscal policy and through wage increases (including the minimum wage and work on an hourly basis). Other proposals were given on work, families, housing, environment, welfare state and education.
