Nine days away from general elections Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi reiterated his party’s pledge to cut income tax by the next budget. During a discussion in Naxxar, Dr Gonzi also said that during the past four years, the number of gainfully employed people stood at 169,000, as opposed to an unemployment figure of 5,600.
A major part of this success was to be attributed to Malta’s membership in the European Union, he said.
On Thursday morning, Opposition Leader and Leader of the Malta Labour Party Dr Alfred Sant met entrepreneurs and social partners in Qawra to discuss the proposals that the Labour party has for Qawra and St Paul’s Bay. He told those present that among other things, an ad hoc Tourism Zone Management Committee would be set up to liaise with the local council to ensure maintenance and serve as a one stop shop for the administrative needs of touristic operators in the area.
Dr Sant also said that the a new car park which can take up to 3,000 cars would be built in partnership with the private sector. Moreover, a yacht marina and a new bus terminal would also be built so that public transport arrangements could be improved.
In a reply to Dr Sant’s statement about the Policy Reform document called “Health Financing Reform”, Dr Ray Xerri, director at the Ministry of Health, categorically stated that the document he was in charge of was neither presented nor discussed by Cabinet as it had met an earlier refusal by virtue of it “not being in line with government’s social policy.”
In the meantime the Prime Minister together with all the Cabinet have filed a libel suit against Dr Sant. PM Gonzi is suing because Dr Sant called him a liar whilst the Cabinet for being called corrupt en masse.
In a press conference in Safi, Alternattiva Demokratika - The Green Party, called for the revocation of the development permit for the Lidl supermarket which according to it was issued illegally.
AD spokesperson Carmel Cacopardo said Alternattiva was pleased that the Commission members shouldered the responsibility and resigned. He said it is now time for whoever appointed them to shoulder political responsibility. The government is obliged to revoke the permits, Cacopardo said.
