As voting day approaches, the electoral campaigns of the contesting parties avidly move on in the local mass media in an attempt to deliver their message to as many of the electorate as possible.
At a press conference at Ta’ Qali, on Tuesday morning, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi immediately referred to the Mistra controversy and stated that it is not his role to defend anyone involved in the case and if anyone was found to have acted irregularly then he would have to account for his actions.
He then accused the Opposition Leader and Leader of the Malta Labour Party Dr Alfred Sant of avoiding Nationalist MP and candidate for the general elections Dr Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando.
As he has been doing in various public meetings, Dr Gonzi spoke of the differences between the track record of the Nationalist administration and that of the Labour party. He also said that should his party be re-elected it would change the focus of its health policies to primary health care, particularly the service given by family doctors.
This was reiterated during the mass meeting that the Nationalist Party organised in Victoria, Gozo where Dr Gonzi addressed thousands of supporters. He told those present that a choice needed to be made between a party which has vision, unity and is offering stability and another party which is offering division and uncertainity.
For the Malta Labour Party’s leadership, the day started with a “tour of incompetence and corruption.” The “Victory bus” took Dr Sant to four different places which according to him stood for government’s incompetence and corruption.
At Dock 1 Dr Sant said the dock was one of a number of unrealised projects promised by the Nationalists whereas the MLP’s programme provided for the redevelopment of the whole harbours area.
The bus then went to Manwel Dimech Bridge where Dr Sant again spoke of how the project had lagged behind its completion target date. The ADT offices at Sa Maison were next on the tour. There, the Labour leader said it was there that Transport Minister Jesmond Mugliett had tried to protect two employees who were arraigned on corruption cases.
The final stop of the tour was Castille. Parliamentary Secretary Tony Abela together with Parliamentary Secretary Tonio Fenech came under Dr Sant’s attack as the first was accused of continuing to practice his notarial profession despite his government job and the second over the way funds were donated from the Lotteries Good Causes Fund.
Time restrictions did not allow for two more visits, one at the Ta’ Qali Crafts Village and the other at the MEPA offices.
Following the tour, Dr Sant went to the Police Headquarters in Floriana for a meeting with the Police Commissioner to whom he gave documentation to be used in the investigation of the alleged irregularities in the handling of the application for development at Mistra on Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando’s land.
After this meeting, Dr Sant said he had just got to know that the Prime Minister had also asked the commissioner for an investigation but, strangely enough, this was not made public, he said.
In the evening the MLP leader was engaged in a "Taht it-Tinda Mieghek fil-Misrah" local meeting. In his short speech, Dr Sant spoke of the MIstra controversy claiming it is all about greed, deceipt, hypocrisy and lack of respect for the environment.
Contrary to what the PN is projecting, the Labour party is not using a mud-slinging tactic to disrepute anyone but is just revealing the facts. On this, Dr Sant said "no one is believing the Nationalist Party."
