Dr Alfred Sant has just submitted his resignation from Party Leader with immediate effect.

The resignation was announced at a press converence at the Labour headquarters in Hamrun late on Monday morning.

Dr Sant stated that whilst his decision is irrevocable he will always be loyal and faithful to the Malta Labour Party and the values it upholds.

Commenting on the election defeat accepted by the MLP in the wee hours on Monday, he said that throughout the campaign the Labour party underestimated the Nationalists’ power of incumbency. “We did not give enough importance to it.” Dr Sant simply said.

He also stated that he does not believe that the Malta Labour Party should undergo any reforms but also said that this was no longer up to him.

Finally, Dr Sant confirmed that for the time being he will be keeping his post as member of parliament.

Dr Alfred Sant has been party leader since 1992 succeeding Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici. He became Prime Minister after winning the 1996 general elections but his government only lasted 22 months.
