On Monday morning, the Electoral Commissioner, Mr Edward Gatt, presented the official results of the 2008 General Election to the president of Malta, Edward Fenech Adami.

The votes polled during the first count, by party, are as follows: Presentation of official results
Alpha. Liberali Demokratiku, 21
Alternattiva Demokratika, 3810
Azzjoni Nazzjonaii, 1461
Forza Malta, 8
Gozitan Party, 37
Imperium Europa, 84
Indipendenti, 22
Malta Labour Party, 141888
Partit Nazzjonalista, 143468

As the figures reveal, the Nationalist Party has acquired the majority of votes, albeit by a mere 1580 votes or 0.55%.  In fact, percentages show that the PN won by 49.34% as opposed to the Labour Party's 48.79%. Since none of the leading parties managed to secure more than 50% of the votes, the governing party will only have a relative majority.

Moreover, the number of seats per party is still to be determined.
