The leaders of the political parties who lost or fared badly in last Saturday's general election have all announced their resignation from the top post of their parties within a few hours of the official results.
The first one to do so was Dr Alfred Sant leader of the Malta Labour Party on Monday morning, who narrowly lost to the PN with just 0.5% of the vote.
A few hours later it was the turn of Dr Harry Vassallo of Alternattiva Demokratika, who expressed his dismay at the unsatisfactory result of his party.
In the evening then the leader of Azzjoni Nazzjonali, Josie Muscat, told a local TV station that it's about time he calls it a day in politics and announced his resignation from the party he created just a few months ago.
These three parties will have to elect a new leader in the coming weeks. The new leader of the MLP will eventually also become Leader of the Opposition, leading the opposition against a government that did not win the absolute majority of votes and did not win the majority of seats in Parliament but will be compensated with extra seats to have the majority in the House of Representatives.
