73 MLP, 70 PN local councillors elected

Seventy-three Malta Labour Party (MLP) and 70 Nationalist Party (PN) councillors have been elected in a total of 23 localities around Malta and Gozo in last week's local council elections. Alternattiva Demokratika (AD) have failed to elect any local councillors in this round.
Three years ago the MLP won 53.16 percent of the total compared to
44.05 percent for the PN. In this round, the MLP won 52.6 per cent of
the vote while the PN won 45.9 per cent, an improvement of two points
over three years ago.
The Nationalist Party has regained Mellieha, Sta Venera and Mqabba local councils which were won by the MLP three years ago. The PN has also made gains in a number of other localities winning new seats in Kirkop, Xewkija, Mqabba, Sta Venera, Zejtun and Marsa. The MLP has gained a new seat in Ghajnsielem.
The Local Council elections were held last Saturday in conjunction with the general election. The higher turnout in this round of elections, 86% (of a total of 97,081 eligible voters) , when compared to three years ago, which was just 68%, proved to favour the PN rather than MLP. The MLP has registered an average loss of around one per cent of the votes over all the localities. In some instances the losses could be higher than 5% of the votes obtained three years ago.
