The newly-elected local councilors were sworn in during an official ceremony at the Auberge de Castille on Friday afternoon. Local Council elections were held on March 8th, the same date as for the general elections.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi advised the elected councillors to be accountable and urged them to respect the role of their executive secretaries as defined by law.

He also thanked those who failed to be elected for presenting themselves to serve the country and the various localities.  Dr Gonzi said that such a resource ought not be lost and whoever contests such elections is showing significant social commitment.  He then appealed to the new councils to involve and make use of these “talents” in their commitment towards community.

Dr Gonzi also called on councilors to use a sense of justice, common good and collective interests when making decisions. “These elements should lead you to make the best possible decisions.” he said.

Amongst those sworn in on Friday is councillor Darrell Pace, elected in the Zejtun local council. Mr Pace used to form part of the MaltaMedia News team. MaltaMedia congratulates Mr Pace for his accomplishment and wishes him further success in his commitment to the Zejtun community.
