Malta Labour Party (MLP) deputy leader for party affairs Michael Falzon on Saturday morning formally announced his candidature for the top post of the party. His slogan will be "Experience and Loyalty, Together for Success".

Speaking at a press conference in the presence of his family, Dr Falzon said that should he fail to be elected as leader, he will not contest for the post of deputy leader but will serve in parliament. He was elected for the first time in Parliament in the March 8 elections, getting a seat on the 2nd and 10th electoral districts.

He also said that he will not interfere in the argument over whether party members and not just the conference delegates should vote to elect the new leader.

Dr Falzon's experience in the MLP includes the post of election manager from 1992 till 1998, international secretary from 1998 till 2003, and deputy leader for party affairs since 2003.

The election of the MLP leader is set for June 5. Until then Dr Charles Mangion, who stated that he will not contest for the leadership post, will be acting leader of the party. An election for deputy leaders will be held on June 12.

The only other official candidate so far for the post of MLP leader is Joseph Muscat, who announced his intentions a few days ago. Other candidates who expressed their willingness to press on their candidature are former education minister Evarist Bartolo, Anglu Farrugia and former MLP deputy leader in the 1990s Gorg Abela.  Nominations officially open a week before the June 5 election.
