Alfred Grixti said he will be contesting the election for general secretary of the Malta Labour Party after a number of people encouraged him by drawing comparisons between him and Jason Micallef, the Times reported.

He said that although he enjoys his current job, the support of people around him convinced him to offer his candidature for the post. He also praised the three candidates who have declared their intention to contest the party’s leadership saying he would be prepared to serve under any of them.

The general secretary would have to offer the leader with a good backing, something Alfred Sant lacked in the last electoral campaign, Mr Grixti said. He later confirmed his intentions on Wednesday afternoon in comments to a local radio station.

The Times also said that Mr Grixti has been active within the MLP ever since he was a teenager and first contested the general election in 1992. In 2003 he was runner up to Jason Micallef in the election to the post of general secretary.
