The dire situation at Malta’s Hal Far open centre for illegal immigrants was brought into the limelight on a popular Italian TV station.
The reportage depicting images and stories gathered directly by a television crew was shown on Rai Tre and also on Rai Med last weekend. It focused on the unhygienic state and crammed conditions faced by the approximately 2,000 illegal immigrants who live in tents at the centre.
The open centre at Hal Far has been criticised heavily over the past years.
AFP last November described how illegal immigrants in Malta, who came to Malta by accident after looking for a better future in Europe, are living in 'inhuman conditions' at the Marsa or Hal Far open centres.
A report in September by Médecins du Monde (MDM) in conjunction with other NGO’s slammed the "deplorable" conditions at the overcrowded camps, warning of health risks for the inmates. The report revealed the problem of severe overcrowding at Lyster Barracks where illegal immigrants are allowed as little as a few hours of fresh air a week and lack suitable sanitary facilities.
Back in 2006, Members of the European Parliament Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs had been appalled at the living conditions of illegal immigrants.
