Hundreds of people paid tribute to Sir Anthony Mamo on Friday afternoon as his coffin covered with a Maltese flag was escorted along Republic street in the direction of St. John’s Co-Cathedral where mass was celebrated by Archbishop Paul Cremona.

After mass, an 80-strong guard by the Armed Forces of Malta escorted the coffin to City Gate where the coffin was driven to Casa Arkati.

Another funeral service will take place tomorrow in Birkirkara, Sir Mamo’s hometown.

Besides being Malta’s first president of the Republic, Sir Anthony Mamo also served as Attorney General, Chief Justice and Governor-General.

The congregation at St John’s co-Cathedral included President Edward Fenech Adami, Chief Justice Vincent Depasquale, the Speaker, Anton Tabone, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and acting leader for the MLP, Charles Mangion.
