MLP extraordinary general conference on Friday

The Malta Labour Party (MLP) will be holding an extraordinary general conference on Friday, May 9 at 1800 CEST. The decision was taken during a meeting by the party’s executive on Friday.

No other details were given about the meeting in the press statement. However the conference is expected to discuss a petition for the new MLP leader to be elected by all paid up party members and not just delegates.

Around 120 of the 900 delegates who are expected to vote for the leadership signed the petition which circulated in recent weeks. This is more than the 10 per cent required by the party statute to force an EGM.

The idea to broaden the voter base beyond the delegates was first mooted publicly by George Abela, before he announced he was standing for the leadership.
