In a letter addressed to the leader of the Opposition, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said that following discussions held within the Nationalist parliamentary group, Dr Louis Galea is being proposed as interim Speaker.
Dr Louis Galea, a parliamentarian for over 32 years, will serve for at least two months until the appointment can be reconsidered when the new Labour party leader is elected in June.
Dr Galea has agreed that if eventually there is agreement between the two sides of the House, he will step down to allow, for the first time in history, a member of the Opposition to preside over the House.
Dr Gonzi said the government has, however, no qualms on keeping MP Carmelo Abela retain his post as Deputy Speaker for these two months.
