The PN general council that
was convened Sunday Morning confirmed Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi as leader of
the Nationalist Party and Tonio Borg as deputy leader.
In his speech, Dr Gonzi appealed
to the opposition to cooperate with the government with a view to open a fresh
chapter in the island's politics. He augured that under a new leader, the MLP
will be more collaborative and less negative.
The Prime Minister said that
the government's is willing to wait until the opposition completes the changes
it is going through before opening talks on how to involve the opposition in
government initiatives.
To facilitate this process,
Dr Gonzi said that a decision was taken for Parliament to be summoned on the
last date possible after the elections.
The government was also willing to wait for the
opposition's final decision on the issue of a speaker for parliament.
