Opposition leader Alfred Sant has claimed that political power was in the hands of a few individuals and that this situation threatened democracy in Malta. In his speech to parliament on Monday evening, he repeatedly warned the government that it should not take the opposition for granted.
Dr Sant also accused the Nationalist Party of exceeding the acceptable limit in using its power of incumbency.
He said that government’s actions had to be evaluated on three different sectors, namely; economic and financial policy, measures aimed at curbing the rising cost of living and safeguarding the people's purchasing power and matters of social policy.
The Opposition leader said that government's programme was weak in these areas but acknowledged that it was positive that the government's administrative programme was in line with EU proposals and initiatives.
Government is unprepared to meet the economic and social challenges it is to face, according to Dr Sant.
