Minister of Finance Tonio Fenech has invited the General Workers Union for talks on the situation at ST Microelectronics, a statement by the government said.

The statement also dismissed any possibility that the ministry of finance had refused to conduct talks with the GWU on the issues saying it had never received such a request from the union. The statement said that since the GWU is showing such interest then the minister would be willing to meet up and discuss.

On Sunday the local media reported how ST, which employs over 2,200 people, was asking for a huge subsidy from the government or else it would close down its operations in Malta.
