The Malta Labour Party knew that it had lost the general election by 1245CET on Sunday 9th March, just 15 minutes after the sorting process had started. However, since the majority in favour of the Nationalist Party was slight the MLP opted to be prudent and wait for the first official count.
This was revealed on Tuesday afternoon by the Deputy Leader for Party Affairs, Dr Michael Falzon in a press conference during which he gave his reactions to the report about the MLP’s electoral defeat published on Saturday.
Dr Falzon said that at 1245CET the Labour party already knew that the PN had a 1,500 vote advantage over it – which eventually resulted in the exact official majority of the first official count.
Commenting on the Electoral Commission’s decision to extend voting time by an hour, Dr Falzon said that the parties were not consulted on this decision and the commission had simply informed him about its decision. In turn, he relayed this decision to MLP leader, Dr Alfred Sant and Deputy leader, Dr Charles Mangion.
The MLP leadership hopeful said the report puts an unjust share of
responsibility on him, by not taking into account and sometimes even
saying things that are not true, while at the same time putting a
smokescreen on certain party officials who should shoulder a much
larger share of the responsibility for the defeat.
Dr Falzon lambasted the report, insisting it unjustly criticised the work of hundreds of volunteers and activists in the electoral process just to put him in bad light. For this Dr Falzon asked the forgiveness of these Party activists.
He also lamented the fact that one of the commissioners who drew the report acted aggressively against him and that an incomplete sentence in the report indicates is was edited before being published.
