Commissioner for Children Sonia Camilleri presented her
third and final report, weeks before leaving her post. In a press conference on
Thursday, the Commissioner called on authorities to take action on a number of
points she raised in the report, including lack of resources in the office.
Sonia Camilleri also said the post of Commissioner of
Children should be a full-time basis one, extended to five years instead of three.
The Commissioner also made note of the cases presented in
2006, which totalled to 155. Only three of the cases were brought forward by
children themselves. A total of 81 cases were solved while a further 47 were
referred to other entities and remain pending.
Sonia Camilleri whose three
year-term ended in December 2006, announced last month that she will not serve a second
term in the office. Ms. Camilleri, the first person to take on the role of
Commissioner for Children, will remain in office until another person is
appointed to the post.
She had informed Prime Minister Dr.
Lawrence Gonzi and the Ministry for the Family and Social Solidarity of her
plans last September.
